CIN Workshop: Using Measurement for QI
Summary:
Learn the essential concepts, tools, and techniques of healthcare measurement & reporting, centered on your own improvement project during this two-day workshop (pre/post trainings are also required)
Description:

The California Improvement Network’s Using Measurement for Quality Improvement training will help participants learn the essential concepts, tools, and techniques of healthcare measurement and reporting, centered on your own improvement project.  While there are pre- and post-workshop WebEx sessions, this two-day, in-person workshop will include interactive presentations and ‘lab’ time to work on their projects (breakfast and lunch will be served).  Afterwards, students are expected to apply their learning on the job, and to share their work and feedback on the listserv.  The training will be led by Richard Scoville, Ph.D., Faculty at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health.

Course objectives are to:

  • Develop a plan for system improvement that integrates outcome measures, key process measures, and balancing measures into an efficient measurement strategy.
  • Create a measurement plan, including: operational definitions, data collection methods, reporting, and training.
  • Understand and apply key measurement concepts such as population, stratification, sampling methods, and more.
  • Differentiate between common and special cause variation to identify successful process changes and to avoid common misinterpretations of the data.

Intended audience members include administrators (e.g., executive directors, medical directors), clinical leaders, operations managers, quality improvement staff, and others who work closely with data for improvement.  Participants will be expected to have a solid background in quality improvement, including more than basic knowledge of the Model for Improvement and PDSA cycles.
