California Health Care Safety Net Institute

IHI Opportunities

Until recently, the top-notch, internationally recognized Institute for Healthcare Improvement programs remained out of reach for most safety net organizations due to their high cost. Now, thanks to an $8 million scholarship program through Kaiser Permanente, representatives of public hospital systems and community health centers can attend Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) learning opportunities.

SNI and KP's Northern California Fund for Community Benefit at the East Bay Community Foundation coordinate this scholarship program for CAPH member public hospital systems. CAPH member staff, clinicians, and administrators may attend IHI improvement programs in the areas of clinical outcomes, patient safety, patient satisfaction, office and hospital redesign. Scholarship Application Process

There are four steps to apply for an SNI/Kaiser Permanente scholarship to attend an IHI program:

  1. CEO Approval Form (PDF) Scholarships to IHI programs are meant to add value to CAPH health systems, as well as benefiting the individual attendee. For this reason, attendees need the support and approval of senior leadership within their organization. To verify this, SNI must have the signature of the CEO or the CEO’s designee on CEO Approval Form. Please print this form, fill it out, and have your organization’s CEO or CEO’s designee sign it. Fax the signed form to SNI Event Coordinator and Administrative Assistant, Angelina Ramos, at 510-874-7111.

  2. After receiving CEO approval, individuals may apply for a scholarship. Please send in your request by filling out this brief Scholarship Form and click “submit”. Note that the request for the Patient Safety Officer Training should be sent at least nine months prior.

  3. The applicant will be contacted and, if approved, provided a code to enter into the electronic registration form on the IHI website.  There will also be follow-up with applicants regarding possible travel support.

  4. Once approved, register for a program via the IHI website and click on Conferences and Seminars or Professional Development

For questions regarding IHI scholarships, please contact Angelina Ramos or (510) 874-7102.
