California Health Care Safety Net Institute

IHI Opportunities
Until recently, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's (IHI) top-notch, internationally-recognized programs have largely remained out of reach for most safety net organizations due to their high cost. Thanks to the CAPH/SNI and Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit Partnership, SNI has been able to provide scholarships to many CAPH members to attend IHI's learning opportunities.

Coordinated by SNI and Kaiser Permanente's Northern California Fund for Community Benefit at the East Bay Community Foundation, CAPH-member staff, clinicians, and administrators may attend IHI improvement programs in the areas of clinical outcomes, patient safety, patient satisfaction, office and hospital redesign.

This year, the scholarship and application processes are structured differently, with a limited number of applications allocated to each program. In this new process, SNI is asking for two or more staff from each system to attend these programs to help spread the learnings more broadly throughout the organization. Please contact Ashley Kirk about which programs your delivery systems are interested in so that SNI can better coordinate the utilization of the these scholarships, as well as help maximize the learnings from these trainings. Scholarship Application Process

There are four steps to apply for an SNI/Kaiser Permanente scholarship to attend an IHI program:

  1. CEO Approval Form (PDF) Scholarships to IHI programs are meant to add value to CAPH health systems, as well as benefit the individual attendee. For this reason, attendees must state their purpose for attending this specific session, as indicated on the CEO Approval Form. Attendees will also need the support and approval of senior leadership from their organizations. To verify this, SNI must have the signature of the CEO or the CEO’s designee. Please print this form, fill it out, and have your organization’s CEO or CEO’s designee sign it. Fax the signed form to SNI Event Coordinator, Ashley Kirk, at 510-874-7111.

  2. The applicant will be contacted and, if approved, provided a code to enter into the electronic registration form on the IHI website. There will also be follow-up with applicants regarding possible travel support.

  3. Once approved, participants may then register for program via the IHI website.

For questions regarding IHI scholarships, please contact Ashley Kirk at (510) 874-3403.
